Radio Diaries – People documenting their lives on National Public Radio

Let me quote:

“Radio Diaries, Inc. is committed to producing a new kind of oral history. Our mission is to find extraordinary stories in ordinary places. We work with people to document their own lives for public radio: teenagers, seniors, prison inmates and others whose voices are rarely heard. We help people share their stories—and their lives—in their own words, creating documentaries that are powerful, surprising, intimate and timeless.”

New York Works       Prison Diaries          Teenage Diaries      Other Documentaries

http://radiodiaries.org/radiodiaries.html

“Prison Diaries aired in on NPR's  (National Public Radio) All Things Considered in January 2001. Launched in conjunction with Prison Diaries is Picture Projects'. The site features in-depth accounts from some of the inmates who have kept diaries, as well as interviews with family members, judges, lawyers, correctional officers, victims and victims' families. 360-degree panoramas allow viewers to enter the inmate's cell, the judge's chamber or family's living room while listening to the audio diaries.” Teachers will experience that these personal narratives mean much more to their students than faceless stories and statistics on the topic. This will definitely get our pupils involved. Listen and read the transcripts.

Adult Learning Activities – California Distance Learning Project

für Schüler durchaus interessant - Hier finden sich u. a. folgende Themen: Computers in the Classroom, Teen Drinking, Threatened at School, Looking for a Job, Amusement Parks, Gun Control, Stop Carjacking, Crime, Police Arrest Parents, Smoking Kills,  9,000 Year-Old Man Found, Computer Virus, Save the Forest, Video Games, Bicycle Messengers – Alle Texte (Dauer etwa 90 Sekunden, teilweise kürzer) werden mit amerikanischem Accent gut verständlich in “angenehmem” Tempo vorgelesen. Daran schließen sich Aufgaben an: Learn new words, Spell the words, Pick an answer, What did you learn?, Write an answer –  Einige Texte gibt es in 2 Versionen: Basic Text und Full Text.

An Australian Legend
On November 11th 1880, Ned Kelly was hanged in Melbourne Gaol in southern Australia after an 18-month manhunt. Was he the lawless thug that some people claim? Or was he (and his family and friends) the victim of systematic abuse from uncaring, brutal authorities? Make your own minds up after reading more about him in this week’s worksheet.
